Confinement-induced impurity states in spin chains

Quantum simulators hold the promise of probing central questions high-energy physics in tunable condensed matter platforms, for instance confinement. Local defects can be an obstacle these setups harming their simulation capabilities. However, form impurities also useful as probes many-body correlations and may lead to fascinating new phenomena themselves. Here, we investigate interplay between impurity confinement a basic spin chain setup, showing emergence exotic excitations impurity-meson bound states with long lifetime. For weak confinement, semiclassical approximations describe capture process meson-impurity scattering event. In strong-confining regime, intrinsic quantum effects are visible through quantization emergent state energies which readily probed simulators.
